Devil Bones - Kathy Reichs

Yes! Another Kathy Reichs novel in a few months, to say the least. This work goes by the name of Devil Bones and is one of the two Kathy Reichs novels that I borrowed from our national library.

They had more of her stuff too, but the library only allows 3 books at a time and I'm only given a three-week time limit.

Not to mention exams are just around the corner.

... You can say... I "held back".

:P

That aside, this is the eleventh book in the Temperance Brennan series so I'm kind of "behind" with the up-close-and-personal stuff? But I enjoyed it anyway.

Summarized, this story is about a fresh case and an unsolved one from some time ago. Slidell, one of Tempe's temporary partners, reckons it might have something to do with certain "practices". Some are even talking about Satan worship and magic.

I learnt loads about religion in this one. Voodoo, Wiccan, Christianity, the whole lot. Don't really recommend this for the staunch Christian followers, though. Unless you're open-minded and don't mind these kind of fiction-based stories regarding religion.

Honestly speaking, there are things I like about Kathy Reichs' works and things I don't like about 'em. For starters, I don't like her works because she gets really emotional sometimes. Like, for children who died really young and stuff like that. I mean, yeah, sure, it's sad, but I sometimes think that Tempe's overreacting.

Not to say it's a bad thing to worry and feel sad about young children dying, but... I don't know, maybe I'm just retarded that way.

In her defense, Tempe had a brother who died when he was really young so I'm thinking that's where the empathy comes in?

Still, just an opinion.

On the other hand, there's quite a distinct difference between her Virals' novels and her Tempe novels. For one, she doesn't use curse words and make her characters swear mid-discovery in her Virals novels. She draws a line between that; like teenagers don't use it as often as adults would (in a certain context. I'm not talking about real life because it's the other way around most of the time).

Just an opinion, like I mentioned.

Either way, I can say I liked this book. Quite twisty.

This book can be found in any of your local bookstores. I borrowed this from the national library but I'm sure MPH, Kinokuniya, Borders, Times and Popular would have this book.

I have yet another to finish and review so this is where I'll leave this :) CIAO!!

まだやったね

I knew you wouldn't fail me.

I just knew it.

I knew it was going to be just weeks before you pissed me off again.

And now you've done it.

Exactly what is wrong with you?

Alright, let me just get this straight: You like to scold people?

You don't understand, do you? Of course you don't. You never take the time to understand. You have all kinds of presumptions about us not doing our jobs properly that you fail to see sense even when it's smack dab in front of you.

"You tak pernah collect duit denda atau tak pernah buat duty?"

Wardy is a hardworking, smart and dedicated girl. She has done nothing wrong to the library. She has always done her work.

Why is it you can't see that?

Let me clear things up right here and now (though you'll never read this, probably): Nobody comes to return/borrow books to/from the library on Fridays. Everyone goes home at 12:30p.m. No living soul except for those on duty come to the library on Fridays.

Accept that fact.

Engrave it into that large microchipped brain of yours. Aren't you smart enough to figure the rest out? If nobody returns any books on that day, how the hell are we supposed to collect any duit denda? It's literally non-existent.

But you don't get that?

Why?

"It's impossible."

Impossible? Impossible? How the f*ck would you know?? Have you ever stayed back on a Friday to investigate? That's the operative word here. Investigate. Did you? So if you've never once tried to see our situation on Fridays, how the f*ck would you know that it's impossible?

Don't gimme that shit. Just because there's money to collect on other days, it doesn't mean that it's the same with Friday. Bloody shit kind of deduction that is.

But alright, let's say there are people who actually come to return or borrow books from the library. You're assuming that everyone will return their books late.

I-I'm sorry, but did that turn into a custom sometime when I was... hmm, I dunno, asleep?? Or maybe it happened in between blinks. You tell me. I'm just so duh right now.

Or maybe you practice it? Do you? Do you intentionally hold on to borrowed books just so you can have the joy and excitement (not to mention exhilaration) when you pay librarians money?

Some people actually return their books on time. Some people would actually like to keep their money in their pockets, not throw it around like maybe you have the capacity to.

Stop judging things by how you want to see it.

"Takkan don't know how many years until now also no duit denda."

Okay, I don't know what kind of logic you're basing this on, but last time I checked, the HO Friday last year wasn't Wardy.

It was someone else.

So instead of just blaming it on the unfortunate person who just happened to land the job this year, why don't you go waste your time interrogating other "suspects" like last year's HO Friday or 2010's HO Friday?

Go up to them (shouldn't matter that they're seniors, right?) and demand for their year's duit denda if you insist upon it so much.

And can Wardy help it if people dislike staying back on Fridays so much? She can't exactly make people borrow or return books now, can she? Doubt you could do it either.

Think before you speak.

"I don't know why right, our librarians, tegur a little bit also cry already."

That's the grand finale. Honestly. Hats off to the best bullshitter in history.

Do you understand what is tegur? It means to advise someone to do the right thing when they're doing something wrong. You're not advising. You're chastising. You're reprimanding. You're not even trying to be nice.

Like I said, you don't understand. You don't get the difference between being stern and scolding. You think you're being stern, but you're not. You're downright scolding. Even the incident with Wing. You couldn't fathom why she started crying because you think you weren't doing anything wrong.

For a person with a brain, you sure act like you don't have one.

People already hate you and you're not doing anything about it. Unless you can really understand why it is that people start crying when you open that stupid mouth of yours, you'll never gain the hearts of the other librarians.

And I'll never stop posting things like this.

Yes, maybe I'm dumb. Maybe I don't get your "stress" (whatever you call stress). But at least when I'm pissed with something, I don't take it out on other people. I don't push my responsibilities to my underlings. I don't treat people as if they were pawns in a chess game and I was the king piece.

The probates are Karis' job. The librarians are Jiunn's job. What are you? The figurehead, sure. And as long as you keep thinking that as a Prez, that's what you're supposed to do, you'll never be a leader.

A real leader.

End of rave.

Till the next time you piss me off.

Today's million-dollar question: What hurts the most?

*          *          *

Ola :)

I woke up a little earlier than usual today :) Heehee. 6:08a.m. Managed to reach school early for morning briefing. It was really fun because the Form 4 librarians and I were talking about Fishface.

And how retarded that person is being.

Anyways, our first subject today was Chemistry. We learnt more of alkenes and whatnot before we returned to our classrooms. Saki was late today so I only met her in class. Ju was absent.

Next was Maths. Not bad. Saki and I skipped the first 40 minutes to find one of our English panel teachers. Decided on moist cookies instead of crispy ones (Hurray!!) so I'm very happy.

During Maths, I went to the library where I met my English teacher. Received my essay to work on it more. The deadline's been extended, but I can't relax until I'm done with it. Chatted with them a little bit more before it was time for more classes.

Moral was nice. Mainly because our teacher didn't come. So, Dellie and I just gossiped about Fishface again and about things going on in our lives. You see, Dellie's been very agitated about certain things and she wanted them cleared so I just lent my ears.

For BM, we had Peribahasa exercises. I just slept then woke up to copy my friend's answers before sending my paper in. My head was going bonkers. I couldn't help it.

Excuses, excuses. But whatever.

Did some Integration questions for Add Maths. Not too bad. Managed to stay awake for that one. Managed to answer all the questions on my first try. Awesome. I know.

Haha.

Started Vectors. Received homework, then school ended. (Our extra class was supposed to be Chemistry, but our Add Maths teacher took the time.)

Before getting to the Star Studio, Saki and I went to pack chao koay teow from the canteen. In the meeting, we discussed about what we were going to sell and who was bringing what on Thursday. Hopefully, they'll actually come.

Ugh~

At 4:00p.m, we played half a round of Zip Zap Zop then went back home. In my case, upon returning home, I helped my dad write a sign for his shop about ladies' night before I went to bathe.

Okay, fine, I watched Arthur Christmas first (downloaded it), then I went to bathe. When I came down, I watched the first few parts of Becoming Jane because I wanted to see James McAvoy :P

Haha.

But I stopped watching after their marriage was disapproved. I didn't like that Jane Austen and Thomas LeFroy didn't end happily. Didn't like when her sister Cassandra's fiance died either. At least, if I remembered correctly, that's what happened. Oh, and the whole ending when Thomas LeFroy got another woman?

Hated that.

Ugh~

I only liked the dancing part where he suddenly appeared in front of Jane Austen :)

Heehee.

Wanted to watch Devil Wears Prada online but they didn't have it :( So, I decided to download it. The same way I downloaded City of Ember, Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Gnomeo and Juliet. City of Ember just finished downloading so I'm watching it now :)

Haha.

Anyways, it's 12 minutes to 10 o'clock so I shall sign off now :) CIAO!!

いつまでもここにいる

I can't understand why it is that everyone seems to be picking fights with us. Exactly what did we do wrong? Are we doing our jobs incorrectly? Are we being unreasonable with our actions?

If you don't tell us, how the f*ck are we supposed to know?

Lemme start with this: Try manning up to us instead of going around backstabbing the whole board in the school. Our teacher can handle it. She's been through worse. So why is it you're purposefully doing this when you can come straight out and say it?

Did you really have to bring it up in a board meeting? I don't know whether to be delighted you're giving us this much attention or repulsed that it's because of such a trifle matter.

Definitely the latter.

I'd really like to see you manage our designated place without as much as a glimpse of us. Why don't you go process your own books and organize the whole bloody Senayan system by yourself? Call your own computing operators when the computers decide to go haywire and plan Reading Week when the time comes.

We're already doing this as some sort of service to the school. Maybe we're not that smart, maybe we're not prefects.

So bloody what?

At least we're still contributing to the school in whatever way we can.

We're the ones behind Reading Week. We're the ones behind its presentability. We're the ones behind the borrowing and returning of books.

We're the ones. Period.

So stop being so insensitive and accusing us of skipping classes when we only do it when given permission and when it's for a probable cause. It's not called "skipping" when we're allowed to be there. It's not called "skipping" when we're actually doing work.

Get your facts right.

You've got the nerve to say we're not smart? Who's the one reeling all the A's for the damn school? The teachers? Yeah, sure, there are a handful I can mention that have really brought the school's name to justice, but for shit teachers like you, you have no right. You were never part of our A's. You were never the reason we scored them. You just lugged your gigantic ass along with your overweight, Chinese-gourd body around the school claiming you're teaching the students.

What kind of human undermines their students just because they're not in class? What's with the exaggeration? As far as the board is concerned, our students've only skipped your class that one time to prepare for the Australians' arrival. Stop whining. It's irritating.

You think you can provide an efficient introduction regarding the library on your own? Forget it. You probably don't even know what we use the front counter for, let alone the back counter and the operation room.

Leave it to the Form 4's? With no guidance whatsoever? Be realistic, you buffoon. Everybody needs guidance in their lives. The Form 4's are no exception, even if most of them scored straight A's for their PMR. It's not like you learned to drive on your own even if you're smart, right?

Oh right, you're not smart.

You don't seem to understand why we're doing this. You think it's for the certificates? You think it's for the title? You think it's for college?

For a married woman, you're bloody ignorant.

It's called love. Write it down. Look it up.

As long as our love for the library transcends your petty remarks, we'll go through anything.

You wanna pick a fight with us?

Bring it on.

But know when you're beaten.

ドラマだった

Today's million-dollar question: What is drama?

*          *          *

Ola :) Woke up late again today - 6:18a.m.

-.-

I've been sleeping past midnight these few days, that's why. Pokemon Emerald. Too addictive :P It's like nicotine in cigarettes, you know?

That aside, I didn't go to class before recess today. Had things to get prepared in the library for the Australians' arrival at 9 something.

Yup, more visitors.

Unfortunately, this time, only the prefects were allowed to be their "buddies", which, to a lot of people and me, is really unfair. Why is it we can only be "buddies" when the Japanese come but not when some Australians come over?

Seems really... unfair.

Either way, I had quite a lot of fun, despite all the drama in the morning. After they came, I spoke to Puan Ng about our co-curriculum carnival on the 18th of April being postponed so I could attend it (as well as with the other librarians).

She said she'd think about it.

Fingers and toes are crossed.

Went up to class for 2 periods of Add Maths with our teacher. It wasn't too bad. Finished Integration off within that time. Was very sleepy though, so I couldn't stop just supporting my head on my arm on the table while Andyy was doing her work.

An agonizing one and 20 minutes later, we had Maths with Puan Faridah. By then, I had already thoroughly burned out, so after jotting down my notes on a piece of paper (courtesy of Ju), I went to sleep for a while.

At 12:30p.m, I went to the library before heading towards the canteen with Jasmynn, Mun Mun, Dellie and Ting Wei for lunch. Had fried koay teow because there wasn't much else to have. At 1:15p.m, Wingy joined us and together, we went up to the library.

Had our Scrabble competition today. Didn't win :( They said it was because I had sucky tiles, but I'm sure my English is not good anyway.

Gotta read more.

Bleghh~

Lounged around a little more after that and went home at 4:30p.m after locking the library up. My God, I actually had to do it twice because after the first time, I realized my big bag was still inside.

O.O

Duh, I know.

Played with my SP for about two hours after bathing then decided to do this. There's not much I can do either, since MediaFire turned on me and decided to suspend my account. Thanks to that, I can't upload download links for all the new music coming out now -.-

Ugh~

Hunger Games

*Whacks table*

*Bangs head*

*Clutches heart*

I'm hyperventilating, by the way -.-

Alright, so, as we all know, Hunger Games is a movie adaptation of the book of the same name by Suzanne Collins. Which reminds me, I have yet to review the book as well. Watched this not two days ago at Pavilion with my family and although it didn't receive many positive remarks from them, I've got my own opinions.

Why don't we start with the negatives? That way, when I'm writing all the positive stuff, I can feel glad I watched it.

Negative point 1: They take it for granted that everyone's read the book.

Why is it a negative point? Well, for one, because of that, they don't bother explaining much about some of the terms. Example: They never explained how the Mockingjay came about. They think that since many have read the book, it's not necessary to add it in. Truth be told, the Mockingjay is a cross-breed between a mockingbird and a jabberjay (genetically engineered to repeat whatever it hears and was used to spy on the people of the 12 districts). Jabberjays are also all male, which is why they mated with mockingbirds to stay alive when the Capitol decided not to use them anymore.

They did not explain what the sign of respect was, either. You know, the gesture where you put your fingers to your lips and raise them to the sky? Yeah. I had people in the cinema next to me going, "What's that?"

-.-

If you want another example, you know when Rue was dying and she asked Katniss to sing for her? In the book, it was explained that Katniss used to sing for Prim and Rue's district shared the same love for music. But was that ever mentioned in the movie? No. So, wouldn't it seem weird for Rue to suddenly ask for her to sing if people didn't know all that stuff?

Conclusion: Never leave out these important things that clarify situations and describe stuff.

Negative point 2: It is all pretty unrealistic.

I don't mean the whole Mockingjays stuff and the Hunger Games theory. I'm talking about how people die and shit. Take, for instance, Rue's death. She didn't even look dead. The part where she took the arrow out too. The bloody thing was so darn sharp and long. Wouldn't hurt to make it pierce deeper into her stomach or something. Isn't that the whole point of it's length?

And the dog thing? Really? I mean, why did they alter it so much? They were not supposed to look like that. They were supposed to have features of the dead tributes.

Maybe they couldn't engineer it in such a way.

Speaking of engineering, what the f*ck was that fire thing? I know what it's supposed to be. I know it's awesome. I know how it's supposed to turn out. What I'm trying to say is, how the hell did it turn out the way it did in the movie? It looked absolutely fake and... cartoon-y! My family and close friends would know this, but I hate fake stuff. Like even in The Three Musketeers when Milady was "sliding" through the traps. Bloody darn fake.

Conclusion: Try to be a little more real?

Negative point 3: Ending.

This is my personal opinion, really. I think that the ending should have been a little more elaborated. I mean, I wanted to know what else happened! I know President Snow's a jackass, but he was supposed to tell Katniss that he knew, right?

And didn't Katniss tell Peeta the whole love thing was an act?

Conclusion: More elaboration, please?

That's about it for the negative points. Now, for the awesome stuff in the movie.

Positive point 1: Great sound effects.

I loved how everything was made "boom" using sound effects. Like when they were firing the fireballs at Katniss? Cool. I felt like jumping out of the way, too. Haha. But maybe that's just me being weird -.-

Positive point 2: A little freedom was taken with the movie.

For example, in the book, they never really showed Gale being mad with Katniss' "display of affection" towards Peeta in the cave, right? I loved that. I hate Gale, honestly, so I don't really care how he feels unless it's misery. My hate's also partial for the guy 'cause I think he's a bad actor.

Remember, only my opinion.

Positive point 3: I think Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence were pretty good at their roles.

Hutcherson is hot. Who can deny it? Nobody might've noticed him until Hunger Games, but now that he's made his debut role as the star in Hunger Games, he's gonna be remembered. I think he was also a good choice because Peeta Mellark was indeed written as a weak guy. He's a baker kid's son, hello? Never fought in his life, perhaps. So yeah, Hutcherson did good. Perfect choice of actor.

Lawrence was stiff as Katniss, but I take it that Katniss herself is a very passive person, so I'll dismiss that. Her facial expressions were stony, but like I said, Katniss herself is a passive person, so it's understandable that she wants to get into her role well. I love her smile, though. She's awfully pretty and I like it when she laughs. Oh, and when she's with Peeta.

So f*cking adorable.

Positive point 4: Kinda realistic in its own special way.

Like I said, they took a little liberty with the lines and stuff, but I love how they could make it such that Katniss very nearly stabbed Haymitch's hand when he was reaching for the jam or something. I think my heart paused for a mini-second.

Haha.

I also like how Katniss really looked like she was gonna kill Peeta after the whole public confession. Haha. I think Peeta and Hutcherson are all irresistible. So cute!! :P I'm starting to sound really biased.

-.-

Shan't deny it.

Positive point 5: The good parts in the book, they maintained.

By this, I mean some of the lines. They may have edited it a bit, like how Katniss said "I just can't afford to think like that" in the movie but it was never said in the book? But they did keep the heart-clenching lines like after Katniss kissed Peeta and he said, "There's no way I'm letting you go now."

Or something somewhere among those lines.

They kept Cinna's lines too, like when he said, "I'm here to make you leave an impression" and others of the like. We don't learn the names of his other assistants, though -.-

~#~

I mean, all in all, it's a good movie. I like it very much and I'm dying to go see it again. However, as usual, the book is always better than the movie. I originally thought that maybe I should watch Catching Fire first before reading the book, but if they're gonna repeat their mistakes like with the elaboration, then I'm better off reading the novel first.

That's about it, then :) CIAO!!

Today's million-dollar question: Have you April Fool'd anyone?

***

Ola :) Woke up at 9:45a.m today because I had class with my Add Maths teacher at 10 o'clock. Didn't have time for breakfast. Uh huh~

Lesson was fine, I guess. Couldn't concentrate much because I was tired and all that -.- To top it all off, she was explaining Physics to me. Bleghh~ Hate that subject, but I got highest for that out of all three of my Science subjects.

Pathetic, I know.

After lesson, I went downstairs to plan our evening with my parents. Mom got mad because I didn't take my supplements. Plus, I had rojak and chicken rice for lunch. I know, I know. Sinful, sinful.

Reserved tickets for Mirror Mirror after that. That's the movie my mom wanted to watch. I thought it was alright, judging from the trailer. I knew it was going to be funny -.-

I like the girl. She's pretty.

The guy's hot too -.-

Got my gramps from PJ before leaving to Pavilion (again -.-). Had dinner at Madam Kwan's. I had fish & chips. Big mistake. Will never do that again. (If we ever go to Madam Kwan's once more, that is.)

Will review the movie after I finish blogging :)

Came back after Mirror Mirror ended and played My Horse (new iPad app) for an hour before sleeping at midnight. Not a smart move, by the way -.-

Today's million-dollar question: What is goodbye?

***

Ola :)

Guess where I am now?

Betcha won't get it right :P I'm in school, actually. Well, to be more specific, the library. Why? Work, of course. It's just that for now I've done all that can be done so I'm waiting for further instructions.

-.-

:P

Anyways, since I'm free, I might as well blog about yesterday and the day before. These two days have been very significant for me because in those two days, I've watched TWO MOVIES!!!!!

AHHH!!!

I know, right? Two consecutive days! That's like... a miracle! Half is thanks to me, the other is thanks to my mom :P

But mostly, it's persistence at work :P

That aside, I woke up at 9 o'clock on Saturday, 31st of March, because I was going to be leaving for Dellie's house. The plan was to meet at her place, go for her class, then head to Times Square where I'll be attending Nitz's and Sindu's birthday party.

...

*Whirr*

Rewind, right?

Yes, you may double take. I am going to Times Square for Nitz and Sindu's birthday party. Two very unbelievably unlikely combinations. I never thought I'd actually want to go :) The thing is, though, I guess I was attending for the cinemas at Times Square. You see, Hunger Games had just recently come out and no matter what, I wanted to watch it.

See? Persistence.

Dellie wanted to watch it with me since all we were going to be doing was eating cake, then going shopping. The latter struck me as "heck no" so I wanted to use that opportunity to catch Hunger Games in GSC.

However, unfortunately, when Dellie and I went to check (after meeting up at her place and going to her music class... and getting Starbucks :P), there was only one seat left and it was in the first row.

... Heck no.

Devastated, we headed to McD's where I got Hot & Roll because I hadn't eaten breakfast. I was starving. Sue me -.-

After that, we went to Secret Recipe, where I had the macaroni prawn with cheese stuff and apple sparkling juice. Yeah~ Not exactly dieting today -.- After the cake and everything else, Dellie and I, with two of our friends, Ning and Laili, headed off to Pavilion where we thought we could watch Hunger Games. Laili had already watched it before but she said it was worth watching twice.

By the way, just so you know, I got permission from my dad to walk over to Pavilion. I did not commit a crime.

However, again, unfortunately, the tickets for 4:30 were sold out. That's when my dad threw me a lifeline. He said we could watch it together as a family. Hallelujah, right? So he let me buy tickets for a later time. In this case, it was 9:30p.m.

Quite unluckily (AGAIN) for me, there were only separated places and the first two rows. I was adamant, however, and wouldn't back down. Heck no. I yearned to watch it too much. So, my dad relented and said it was alright for me to take a separate place and take any other places in groups of two.

Got my wish :)

Haha.

I'll tell you about the movie later. Couldn't eat anything for dinner because before that, I already had Chatime and two scoops of Baskin Robbins' ice cream since I would get it for 31% off.

31st March, remember?

Yeah~ :)

Came back after the movie and went straight to sleep because it was already midnight. That's about it, then. CIAO!!
